Are you looking to enhance your understanding of Acute Oncology (AO)? This module will equip you with the core knowledge required to support people with the problems they may experience as a result of living with cancer or from its treatment.

On completion of the module, you will:

  • Understand the meaning of acute cancer care and the oncology emergency services
  • Be aware of common acute symptoms that patients may experience as a result of their cancer or its treatment
  • Identify some common patient presentations of symptoms with acute cancer or cancer treatment complications
  • Be able to recognise potential emergency symptoms and take appropriate action within your sphere of responsibility to ensure urgent care and optimal outcomes for people with cancer
  • Provide information, care, support, and signposting for people living with cancer within your sphere of responsibility

What level is it?

Essential level

This module is aligned to the national acute oncology competency passports, and equips learners with Level 1 (core) knowledge. See the UKONS Knowledge and Skills framework for more information. Passports for Levels 2-4 will be available soon (check UKONS for updates).

Who is it for?

This module is suitable for anyone who works in health or social care who may be in contact with acutely unwell patients with a cancer diagnosis such as:

  • Staff in primary or secondary care who contact, assess, or treat people living with cancer
  • The supportive and assistive workforce
  • Pre-registration healthcare students
  • Early career acute oncology professionals
  • Call handlers such as 999,111 and charity call handlers

How is it delivered?

This is an e-learning course which takes, between 3 to 5 hours to complete. You can do it at your own pace and your progress will be saved if you want to complete it later.
